Radiation protection expert (RPE): who is he and what does he do?

The Radiation Protection Expert is one of the key figures for safety in all contexts – companies and public bodies – where technologies based on ionising radiation are used.
However, it is often not easy to define precisely the range of tasks performed by this professional.

In this article we try to make clear.

Who is the Radiation Protection Expert

Radiation Protection Expert (RPE) is a professional that ensures the application of preventive and regulatory measures to protect personnel and the environment in environments potentially exposed to radiation exposure and contamination.

Therefore, the RPE is qualified to:

  • Assess and manage radiological exposures;
  • Contribute to the design of radiation protection plans and implementation of safety protocols;
  • Interpreting and applying regulations, ensuring compliance with safety standards and radiological laws;
  • Develop exposure monitoring protocols;
  • Manage detection devices.

On balance, it plays an essential role in ensuring that radiological activities are carried out with the utmost safety.

Specific training and continuing training

The responsibilities and functions of the RPE are based on specific preparation and continuous training in regulatory and technological developments.

The qualifications required range from a degree in scientific disciplines, preferably in nuclear physics or engineering, to the acquisition of specific certificates in radiation protection.

Training is essential to keep up with technological and regulatory developments, ranging from the management of measurement and monitoring tools to the ability to communicate effectively with staff involved in radiological activities.

Awareness of the need for regular updates reflects the dynamic nature of the sector, where regulations and technologies are evolving. In this context, the RPE assumes the crucial role of facilitator between innovation and radiological safety, ensuring the protection of people and the environment.

Radiation monitoring and detection

The procedures for monitoring and detecting radiation are the basis of the work of the Radiation Protection Expert, Using specific equipment to identify and categorize radiation and process the data collected into models which are subsequently shared with the customer. These models can identify and locate possible causes – in the form of incorrect behaviour and/or defective machinery – of losses or accidents that could lead to dangerous exposures as well as legal repercussions.

For example, personal and environmental dosimeters are used to measure and assess the radiation doses to which people may be exposed. The RPE is able to analyse and interpret data collected through continuous monitoring and assess the impact of radiation on the health of workers, patients or the surrounding environment.

From monitoring to management and mitigation of radioactive risks

Analysis of the data collected by the detection tools results in risk assessment and planning for an appropriate prevention system.

In practice, the RPEs work with key players such as security managers and civil protection organisations to develop and implement effective emergency plans and protocols, Including evacuation procedures to deal with accidental exposure or accident situations.

In addition, the RDU is essential for the definition of safe working practices such as the use of personal protective equipment and the application of engineering practices that minimize radiation exposure. This is particularly true in high-risk scenarios, such as nuclear medicine, the nuclear industry or research.

Training is given a high priority, ranging from understanding radiological risks to the correct use of measurement and monitoring tools, providing operators with theoretical and practical information.

Similarly, the RPE plays an active role in organising exercises and simulations, enabling staff to acquire practical skills in dealing with radiation-related emergency situations.
